LANBOT: Automatic configuration of Local
Area Networks
Network
devices are increasingly used at home. The
technology that was practically reserved for
network experts until the end of the last
millennium now spreads at a fast pace because
of xDSL, cable modems and computers that are
equipped with network adapters and even with
WLAN modules.
LANBOT addresses all setup related issues in a
LAN automatically. This applies
especially to contradicting settings, that are
generally difficult to fix.
Global IP Telecommunications have conducted an
ad-hoc study which leads to the result
that 50% of network administrators need one
to two hours to fix a simple port collision
problem in a LAN that just consists of a
network router, a PC and a stand-alone
IP telephone.
Engineers from AirDefense, Inc. conducted a
war drive around office buildings
in three cities in 2003: Atlanta, GA, Chicago,
IL and San Francisco, CA. The results show
that "of the 1,136 access points detected in
the three cities, 650 - 57 percent - did not
utilize any form of encryption, such as WEP,
WPA, LEAP, PEAP or other proprietary
solutions. AirDefense determined that 104
access points - 9 percent of the total - were
rogue access points because they were in
complete default settings for their SSID,
channel, IP addressing and broadcasting of
their SSIDs."
A
"War Driving Survey" that was conducted in
Nov. 2004 in Hong Kong has unveiled that
60% of WEP/WPA were disabled. This figure has
improved although since 2003 by 9%.
“Automatic configuration of network devices
like computers, routers, access points, Pocket
PCs in a LAN requires interdependent
computation of settings. This complex task can
only be solved by a flexible and fully open
object model that allows partners to modify
and add device definitions“, says C. B.
Roellgen, CTO of Global IP Telecommunications,
Inc. The new development renders fully
automatic management of all devices in a LAN
possible. Internet Service Providers and
hardware manufacturers will be able to deliver
products that configure themselves
automatically. “It is exciting to work on the
solution that removes the greatest barrier for
internet technologies to rapidly penetrate
more parts of our lives. ISPs fully confirm
our view and their input has been very
helpful!” Mr. Roellgen further points out.
